Solving the Light-Gap Problem: A Whole-Home Roller Shade Project in Willis

Layered blackout and light filtering roller shades in a bedroom, Willis, TX project

Some blackout shades block almost all the light — until you notice the strip of daylight sneaking in along the sides. It’s one of the most common frustrations homeowners run into with single-layer blackout shades, and it’s exactly the challenge we solved for a family preparing their new home in the Bentwater neighborhood of Willis, TX before move-in day.

Why Light Still Gets Through “Blackout” Shades

Even high-quality blackout fabric has a limit: if the shade is mounted inside the window frame and doesn’t have a side channel or cassette system to seal the edges, light finds a way around it. This is especially noticeable in rooms where full darkness matters most — media rooms, nurseries, or bedrooms for anyone sensitive to early morning light. The fabric itself isn’t the problem; it’s the gap between the shade and the wall.

Our Solution: Layering Two Shades for Full Coverage

For this project, we installed two roller shades on each window instead of one. A light filtering shade, mounted inside the frame, handles everyday use — softening daylight while keeping rooms bright and airy. Then, a blackout shade mounted outside the window frame extends past the opening on both sides, closing the gaps an inside-mounted shade alone can’t cover.

The result is flexibility: soft, filtered light during the day, and a much darker room at night or whenever full privacy is needed — without giving up either option.

A Whole Home, Ready Before Move-In Day

This wasn’t a single room — it was every window in the house, for a family relocating to the Houston area — specifically Bentwater, in Willis, TX — who hadn’t moved in yet. Our goal was simple: have the entire home functional and comfortable before they arrived, so their first days in a new city start without one more thing to figure out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do blackout shades block all light completely? True 100% blackout is rare with a single shade — even quality blackout fabric can let light escape around the edges, especially on inside-mounted installations. Pairing an outside-mounted blackout shade with an inside light filtering shade closes those gaps for a much darker result.

Can I use two different roller shades on the same window? Yes. Combining a light filtering shade (mounted inside the frame) with a blackout shade (mounted outside the frame) is exactly the layering approach used in this project.

How long does a whole-home roller shade installation take? Timing depends on the number of windows and product lead times. We plan installs so your home is ready on your schedule — ask us for a timeline specific to your project during your consultation.
