Exterior Roller Shades

Turn a hot, exposed patio into outdoor space you can actually use. Custom exterior roller shades reduce direct sun and glare, preserve airflow and your view, and can help control mosquitoes when paired with the right side-track system.

  • Less heat & glareStop direct afternoon sun before it takes over the patio.
  • View-preserving meshChoose the openness and color around the view you want to keep.
  • Better bug controlSide-track systems close the edge gaps that open shades leave behind.
  • Manual or motorizedMatch the controls to the opening size and how often you will use it.

Exterior roller shades—also called patio drop shades, outdoor solar shades or retractable patio screens—lower vertically across an opening and roll back into a cassette when they are not needed. Unlike an interior shade, they stop direct sun before it reaches the patio or covered outdoor opening.

The best starting question is not “Which brand is best?” It is “What do I need this opening to do?” A west-facing outdoor kitchen may need maximum glare control. A pool patio may prioritize the view. A porch used at dusk may need tighter insect control. Héctor or Arturo measures the opening, checks the mounting surface and exposure, and then brings the right fabric and hardware choices into the conversation.

Choose the right system

Side channels, wire guides or pivot arms?

The hardware matters as much as the fabric. We choose it from the opening, exposure and result you want—not from a one-system-fits-all sales script.

Best seal

Zip-channel system

The fabric edges travel inside side tracks. This is usually the strongest choice when insect control, smaller edge gaps and a finished enclosure feel are priorities.

Most open look

Wire-guide system

Stainless guide cables control the hem bar while keeping the sides visually light. A good fit when shade and glare control matter more than fully closing the edges.

Angled sun control

Pivot-arm system

Spring-loaded arms project the fabric outward instead of holding it flush. This creates an angled shade plane while preserving ventilation beneath the fabric.

Where they work best

Covered patios & porches

Lower the shades when afternoon sun or mosquitoes arrive, then retract them when you want the space fully open.

Outdoor kitchens

Control glare and flying insects without permanently walling off the cooking and dining area.

Pool patios

Add shade and privacy while keeping the sightline between the patio, yard and pool.

Pergolas & balconies

Custom mounting handles openings where a stock-size screen or permanent enclosure does not fit cleanly.

Mesh, color & openness options

There is no single "best" fabric. A tighter weave gives more shade and privacy; a more open weave keeps more airflow and outward visibility. Color changes the result too, so we compare physical samples in your actual light before you choose.

Starlite mesh lab

Tighter solar mesh

Stronger glare control and daytime privacy for hard-hit south- and west-facing openings.

Straight answers

What exterior shades do—and what they do not

A good recommendation starts with honest expectations about the finished space.

What they can do

  • Reduce direct sun, heat and glare where the shade covers the opening
  • Preserve airflow and outward visibility with the appropriate solar mesh
  • Help reduce mosquitoes and flying insects with a well-fitted track system
  • Retract when you want the patio open again

What not to expect

  • Turn an open patio into a sealed, air-conditioned room
  • Make every mesh fully private at night when the patio lights are on
  • Replace hurricane shutters or code-required storm protection
  • Create a waterproof wall for wind-driven rain

Plan your quote

What affects the cost of exterior roller shades?

Custom patio shades are not priced accurately by a generic “per-opening” number. We measure first because each opening and mounting condition changes the system.

  • Width and drop of each opening
  • Number of separate shade panels
  • Manual crank or motorized operation
  • Fabric, color and openness selection
  • Side channels, wire guides or pivot arms
  • Mounting surface and required build-out
  • Power, controls and smart-home integration
  • Wind exposure and product-specific requirements

Your written quote should identify the system, fabric, controls, installation and applicable manufacturer warranty so you can compare proposals fairly.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions about exterior roller shades

How much do exterior roller shades cost in Houston?

Price depends on the width and height of each opening, number of panels, fabric, guide system, mounting conditions and whether you choose manual or motorized operation. Because these variables change the hardware as well as the labor, we measure the patio and provide a written project quote instead of using a misleading one-price-fits-all figure.

Do exterior roller shades actually block heat?

They reduce solar heat where the mesh blocks direct sun, which is why they work especially well on south- and west-facing patios. The exact result depends on fabric openness, color, sun angle and how completely the opening is covered.

Do retractable patio screens keep mosquitoes and bugs out?

A zip-channel system with insect mesh can greatly reduce mosquito and flying-insect entry because the fabric edges stay inside tracks. It is not an airtight enclosure, and open gaps at a roofline, door or floor still matter, so we evaluate the complete opening.

Can I still see outside with the shades down?

Yes, with solar mesh chosen for outward visibility. A more open weave preserves more view and airflow; a tighter weave provides more glare control and daytime privacy. At night, interior or patio lighting can reverse the privacy effect, so no open mesh should be presented as guaranteed two-way privacy.
