A New House, A Personal Style: Zebra Shades & Plantation Shutters in Shenandoah, TX

When someone moves into a home that’s new to them, there’s almost always a stage where the house is complete, but it doesn’t feel theirs yet. That’s exactly what a client in Shenandoah recently asked us to help solve — and the project ended up being one we genuinely like showing off, not because it was complicated, but because it’s a good example of how we think about a whole house, not just one window at a time.

The Upstairs Office: Continuity, Not Just Coverage

One thing she specifically asked for — and it’s the kind of request that tells you someone’s really thinking about their home as a whole, not as separate rooms — was matching the same zebra shade color and system on another set of French doors, this time in her upstairs office. Visually, that creates a consistent line between spaces, even on different floors. It’s a small detail a lot of homeowners don’t think to ask for, but it makes a real difference in how the whole house feels.

The Living Room Doors: Zebra Shades That Complement What Was Already There

The house already had plantation shutters on most of the windows. What it needed was a solution for two sets of French doors in the living room — traditional shutters weren’t the best fit there given the size and everyday use of the doors, so we talked through zebra shades as the better option for that space, and the color we chose complements the rest of the house instead of competing with the shutters already in place.

The Primary Bedroom: Plantation Shutters

For her bedroom, we went with wood plantation shutters — the same product already used throughout the rest of the house, made by one of our Houston-based premium shutter manufacturers. The goal here wasn’t to reinvent anything, just to finish what the house was already asking for.

What’s Next: New Bahama Shutters

This project is still ongoing. The home sits in a gated community, and the new exterior Bahama shutters needed HOA approval before any work could start — including the specific color they’d need to be painted. With that approval in hand, we’re now ready to get started building and installing them. It’s the kind of step that’s easy to overlook from the outside, but it’s a normal part of working in a community like this one, and it’s most of what we actually do: relationships that continue, not one-time sales.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do zebra shades work well alongside plantation shutters in the same home? Yes — it’s actually one of the combinations we recommend most. Shutters give that architectural look on fixed windows, while zebra shades are more practical on everyday-use openings like French doors.

Can I use the same zebra shade color on different floors of my house? Yes, and it’s a detail worth asking for — matching color and system across floors creates visual continuity even in spaces that aren’t directly connected.

Do you make new Bahama shutters? Yes. We build and install new Bahama shutters and work within HOA requirements such as color approval, which is common in gated communities.

Are zebra shades a good fit for French doors? Yes — French doors get everyday use, and zebra shades hold up well to that while still giving a clean, tailored look.
