Small explorers. A little extra attention.

October is Window Covering Safety Month. Curiosity, on the other hand, has no season. This is a guide to come back to all year.

01 · For little hands

Cords are not toys.

Pull cords, continuous loops and some inner cords can cause strangulation in young children. It can happen quickly and silently, even with an adult nearby.

CPSC recommends replacing corded window coverings with products labeled cordless wherever a child may be present. Read CPSC’s official cord safety guide →

02 · A room-by-room look

Start where they play.

You do not have to tackle the whole house at once. Start with one window and these three things to look for.

Spot the cords

Look for hanging cords or chains, loops, and any cord that could be within reach.

Move the climbables

Move cribs, beds, sofas, furniture and toys away from windows and cords, preferably to another wall.

Think beyond home

Include rooms children only visit, such as those in grandparents’ homes.

03 · Get to know the controls

Cordless? Motorized? Let’s ask.

No dangling pull cord

A cordless blind or shade operates without a dangling pull cord. Confirm the model and review its controls, chains, loops and inner cords.

A remote is not the whole story

Some motorized systems offer operation without an accessible pull cord. It depends on the product and installation: a remote alone does not confirm it.

04 · For curious paws, too

Just pets at home? This is for you, too.

Look at the places your pets play or climb and the cords they can reach. According to veterinarian-reviewed guide from PetMD, kittens can become tangled in dangling blind or curtain cords, or swallow them.

Ask about options that avoid those cords. If a pet is entangled, injured or may have swallowed a cord, seek veterinary help right away.

05 · Let’s look together

Not sure what’s on your windows? Let’s take a look.

You do not need to know the technical terms. Tell us who shares your home and what you want to check. We will help you understand the options, without pressure.

Four questions to bring along

  1. How does this blind or shade raise, lower or open?
  2. Will any cords or chains be within reach?
  3. Can we review the manufacturer’s label and instructions?
  4. Which option fits this window and my family?
